UBC MEL MHLP Chris McKinnon - Connecting Students with Industry

I am tremendously excited to be a part of this unique and career-enhancing program at UBC. In my position as Employer Relations and Careers Manager, my primary goal is to develop strong professional relationships with students in the program and empower them to pursue rewarding career opportunities post-graduation.

As I step into this role, I bring years of experience and education in Human Resources. This includes expertise in career advising, professional development, resume and cover letter writing and interview coaching. Within my role, I will connect with students currently enrolled in the MEL and MHLP program to support them as they prepare to transition into new positions of leadership. Further, I will continue to strengthen these professional relationships as alumni navigate their career-paths post-graduation.

In order to fully support students with their professional development, I will meet with them regularly. During our meetings, we will discuss effective application writing, interview tactics, networking techniques and a variety of other career-related topics. For instance, we will analyze cover letters and resumes to ensure that their applications accurately reflect their qualifications and experience. Moreover, I will guide students through interview techniques and best practices. Together, we will build and expand their career-development skills so that they may enter their industry with confidence upon graduation.

I greatly value the success of current students; but, beyond this, I intend to uphold strong, ongoing and effective professional relations with MEL and MHLP alumni and industry. I share in UBC’s alumni vision to “reach, inspire, and engage alumni through lifelong enrichment by nourishing pride; empowering personal growth, supporting professional development; and enabling contribution.” So, not only will I fully engage in meaningful discussions with students during their time in the program, but I will carry these established professional relationships well into the future.

I know that the MEL and MHLP students are graduating with the technical and business skills to become change-makers within their respective industries. I will aid them in reaching their professional goals so that they may advance their careers to create impactful change. I look forward working with students and witnessing their successes.
