Graduates of the UBC Master of Engineering Leadership (MEL) in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering are ready to step into a range of professional roles, from marine and project engineering to managing large naval capital projects and marine life-cycle management.
Our graduates stand out with their unique combination of skills. Over the course of their 12-month full-time postgraduate degree, they have expanded their knowledge of engineering and naval architecture through courses from UBC Faculty of Applied Science. They have also deepened their business and leadership skills through classes offered from UBC Sauder’s Robert H. Lee Graduate School.
This powerful interdisciplinary education enables them to lead multidisciplinary teams and complex projects. They are strategic thinkers who thrive in fast-paced environments as they collaborate with multidisciplinary internal and external stakeholders to develop innovative solutions and build resilient communities.
Experienced professionals with specialized skills
A Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering graduate has the multidisciplinary technical expertise needed to address ship design and ship-building requirements. Collaborative team players, visionary leaders and technically adept, they add value to your organization with their ability to:
- Apply modern techniques, including design software and databases, to translate client requirements into practical vessel specifications.
- Understand build strategy, shipyard layout and equipment, manufacturing techniques, outfitting and painting techniques, material properties, corrosion, welding, fatigue and composite materials to ensure practical and producible vessels.
- Apply strategic thinking towards the interaction between the ship and the sea, including hydrostatics, hydrodynamics and ship dynamics (including modelling and analysis), and being able to translate results into design decisions.
- Demonstrate critical thinking regarding marine propulsion systems, ship engines, shafting, ship vibrations, on-board systems (piping, HVAC, electrical) and advanced propulsion systems, marine mechanical and electrical power transmission generation, distribution and use.
