On May 29th and May 30th, students from the 2018 cohort of the Masters of Engineering Leadership (MEL) and Masters of Health Leadership and Policy (MHLP) programs celebrated their graduation. The cohort consisted of a total of 66 MEL and 14 MHLP graduates. The ceremonies, hosted by UBC President and Vice Chancellor Santa Ono, were held at UBC’s Chan Centre for the Performing Arts.

Students gathered to hear speeches from Ono and this year’s honorary degree recipients, including Pervez Hoodbhoy, one of Pakistan’s foremost scholars of Physics and Mathematics and Leona Sparrow, triple UBC alumna and former member of the UBC Senate. 2018 MEL president and Clean Energy Engineering student Diana Aguilar was also invited to speak at the convocation.

Aguilar reflected on her “spectacular” experience at UBC and the MEL program. In order to develop key leadership skills achieved from the program, Aguilar emphasized the “life experience that gives [professionals] the opportunity to interact with different cultures, languages and unique customs.” She continued on looking back at how she and her peers “pushed through challenges and overcame [their] own limits”.
