UBC Applied Science Professional Programs host inaugural awards ceremony

March 10, 2016

Students from the inaugural cohort of the UBC Masters of Engineering Leadership (MEL) and Masters of Health Leadership and Policy (MHLP) programs gathered with faculty and staff to celebrate the scholarship winners for 2016. Twenty-five students received $5,000 merit-based awards. The celebration was held at the UBC Applied Science Professional Programs office on UBC’s Vancouver campus.

UBC Applied Science Dean Marc Parlange and Associate Dean Elizabeth Croft welcomed and congratulated the students and presented them with their awards. Directors and Department Heads from all programs joined the celebration.

According to student body president, Daniel Wanis-Ruiz, the awards ceremony was a good complement to the value he finds in his program, the Master of Health Leadership and Policy program, Seniors Care. He said, “Complex systems in healthcare require complex solutions. The course work in commerce and applied sciences gives me the tools I need to face these challenges.”

Students were overheard praising their programs saying:

“It’s a mix of technical ideas which is engaging for the engineering side of my brain and business courses from Sauder, which is a fantastic mix.”
Andy Miller –Master of Engineering Leadership in Integrated Water Management

“The diversity of the MHLP cohort is a great mix of social workers, researchers, and health care professionals, which creates a great opportunity for me to be involved in an interdisciplinary network.”
Alex Chui, Master of Health Leadership and Policy in Seniors Care

“The MHLP Program is introducing me to a new way of looking at aging. The ability to bounce ideas off people coming from different walks of life encourages me to broaden my perspectives.”
Diana Cochrane – Master of Health Leadership and Policy in Seniors Care

“This program is perfect for my career right now – I am just starting to take on more responsibility for design so both the business and technical courses help bolster my confidence and skills in my field.
Alice Kruchten – Master of Engineering Leadership in Integrated Water Management

“Teachers and professors in Green Bio are fantastic. I look forward to the co-op portion in my future.”
Brandon Hsu – Master of Engineering Leadership in Green BioProducts

“It is a completely different experience that offers rich and challenging learning, which is exactly what I wanted.”
Nikhil Jain – Master of Engineering Leadership in Advanced Materials Manufacturing

“I am trying to develop who I am as a leader and this program is helping me do that.”
Rishabh Rajiv – Master of Engineering Leadership in Dependable Software Systems

“Being exposed to new software and developing business acumen on how to run a project and manage people is what I like about this program.”
Robert Meneguzzi — Master of Engineering Leadership in Advanced Materials Manufacturing
