Get ready to join us in 2027

On January 1, 2026, the application portal for the Master of Engineering Leadership (MEL) and Master of Health Leadership and Policy (MHLP) will begin accepting applications for our transformative programs for the 2027 cohort.
We offer sector-specific programs in:
- MEL – Clean Energy Engineering
- MEL – High Performance Buildings
- MEL – Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering
- MEL – Urban Systems
- MHLP – Clinical Education
These integrated, interdisciplinary programs combine industry-specific coursework with courses in leadership and business. It’s a winning combination that empowers our graduates to confidently move into positions of responsibility and influence.
“Deciding to shift gears by going back to school is a significant undertaking,” says Academic Director Justin Bull. “The students that join us to pursue the MEL or MHLP know deep down that they can do more for themselves, their communities and the world – and that this specific degree from UBC can be an accelerator for that process to happen.”
While there are many master’s degrees to choose from, the MEL and MHLP stand out over other options. You will:
Benefit from an interdisciplinary curriculum: You’ll take courses specific to your industry sector, complemented by courses taught through UBC Sauder School of Business, Canada’s top-ranked business school.
- Gain a highly respected master’s degree from one of the world’s top universities: UBC is consistently ranked as a leading university.
- Grow your network: In addition to your student colleagues who come to the program with considerable professional experience and a profound desire to gain new skills, you’ll connect with industry leaders through capstone projects and practicums in some programs, project-based coursework, and industry networking events exclusive to MEL and MHLP students.
- Set yourself on a path to new opportunities: with your expanded skill set, industry connections and relevant project experience, you will be well set up to transition into new, more rewarding roles.
Our alumni say it best:
“The MEL program, with its inclusion of high-level business and leadership courses, is excellent at preparing people to make a difference in industry,” says Donghee Kim, a graduate of the MEL in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.
“Ten years ago, as a nurse, my area of influence was limited to the patients I was working with each day,” says Charmaine Viaje, a graduate of the MHLP in Clinical Education who is now a technology implementation manager for the new St. Paul’s Hospital. “In this role, I have a larger impact working at a facility that aspires to be the most technologically advanced hospital in Western Canada.”
