Eligibility Requirements

The MEL and MHLP degrees are for practicing professionals who have competed an undergraduate degree and who have a minimum of three years of full-time work experience in a related field. 

Professional experience 

You must have a minimum of three years full-time work experience in a related field by the start date of the program. We only count professional experience gained after you completed your bachelor’s degree towards this requirement. 

Academic experience 

You must have a bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to the program you wish to study. You must also meet UBC’s minimum academic requirements, which are based on the country where you completed your undergraduate degree. 

Program-specific requirements 

Each MEL and MHLP program has specific academic and work experience requirements. 

ProgramProgram Specific Requirements
Clinical Education
  • Clinical undergraduate health professional credential (such as in nursing, social work, occupational therapy, dietetics or medicine)
  • Three or more years of relevant work experience as a clinician after completing your undergraduate degree
  • Clinical education experience is an asset, but not required
Clean Energy Engineering
  • Undergraduate degree in engineering or a bachelor of science degree in environmental science
  • Completion of a second-year undergraduate thermodynamics course with high academic achievement
  • Three or more years of relevant work experience after completing your undergraduate degree
High Performance Buildings
  • Undergraduate degree in engineering or architecture
  • Three or more years of relevant work experience in the building sector after completing your undergraduate degree 
Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering
  • Undergraduate degree in engineering or naval architecture
  • Three or more years of relevant work experience after completing your undergraduate degree
Urban Systems
  • Undergraduate degree in a discipline related to urban systems (a degree in engineering is not required)
  • Three or more years of relevant work experience after completing your undergraduate degree
