Association on Mineral Exploration (AME) Roundup 2019
From January 28 to 31, 2019 the Association on Mineral Exploration held their annual “Round-up.” This was an opportunity for professionals in the Minerals and mining sectors to come together to discuss new strategies, learn from industry experts and review the latest tools.
Whilst not a perceived as traditional market for students from the UBC Master of Engineering Leadership (MEL), the opportunities were plain to see.
A number of these organizations, in attendance, work in remote communities, deep underground or on rigs at sea. Some of the biggest challenges they face include transportation and logistics management, data security and integrity and efficient energy consumption and generation.
Many of the companies are looking to connect these rural communities and projects via road and rail infrastructure upgrades. This requires consultation with key stakeholders, government organizations, environmental management groups and urban planners that brings strengths in project management. This requires a deep insight into the technical requirement of the project as well as a good understanding of the business implications. Something MEL students in Urban Systems are well-versed in.
Additionally the need for data security and management of critical information provides plenty of opportunity for students from the Dependable Software Systems to discuss the latest reliability mechanism and factors amongst their peers. As often times the information shared between contractor and client is sensitive in nature, the need for robust systems has never been stronger.
However the biggest opportunity discussed at the conference lies in clean energy. This may seem a paradox to the industry, but the need is clear. With the rising cost of fossil fuels, companies working in these remote communities are looking for alternatives to diesel burning generators to supply their power. They are investigating long term replacements such as solar and wind power to reduce their expenses, decrease emissions and transition to a more renewable energy program.
