Upgrade your technical expertise and develop new business and leadership skills

The Master of Engineering Leadership (MEL) degree is for practicing professionals who want to gain the knowledge, credentials and skills to propel their careers forward.

The program combines courses from the UBC Faculty of Applied Science with courses from UBC Sauder’s Robert H. Lee Graduate School. This unique curriculum sets the MEL apart from other master’s engineering programs, equipping graduates with the in-demand skills and knowledge employers are looking for and enabling them to confidently move into leadership and management positions.

Interdisciplinary

Between 40% and 50% of your courses will be specific to your area of specialty:

The remainder of your courses will explore leadership, strategy, innovation, data analytics and more.

This holistic, interdisciplinary curriculum provides you with an integrated understanding of best practices in both engineering and management. Through collaborative industry-driven projects – and a capstone project in some programs – you will develop practical skills and build a network across disciplines, positioning yourself to lead effectively in today's interconnected professional environment.

Learn to be a transformative leader

There’s a big difference between being part of a team and being a leader. The MEL equips you to confidently lead interdisciplinary project teams in a range of professional settings.

Leadership is woven throughout the curriculum, and in every course, you’ll have opportunities to learn about, reflect on and practice your skills.

When you graduate, you’ll have the credential of a master’s degree from one of the world’s best universities, as well as the network, experience and knowledge needed to make a significant career shift and work for meaningful transformation within your field.

An accelerated program

This is a degree designed for impact. Unlike many master’s programs that are between 18 and 24 months, the MEL is a 12-month master’s degree that sets you up to advance quickly when you rejoin the workforce.

Competitive edge

Our graduates advance into positions of responsibility, empowered to apply their unique skills to advance change within their industry. As a graduate of the MEL, you’ll gain the specialized skills and broad business knowledge needed to lead interdisciplinary teams and make an impact.
