If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you may be eligible for a government student loan to help finance your education.

International students may have the option to apply for loans from their home country, such as the [US Direct Loan](https://students.ubc.ca/finances/student-loans/funding-us/?_gl=1*1hxdr5f*_gcl_au*MTE2NzYwODcwMS4xNzMzOTU2NjUy*_ga*NzA5MDUyNTg1LjE2OTI4MjU0Mjk.*_ga_4HEE092K89*MTczMzk1NjY1MS4zNy4xLjE3MzM5NTY4NzYuNjAuMC4w) for eligible American students.

In addition, many financial institutions offer student loans. One alternative is a Student Line of Credit (SLOC), which can be a flexible option if government loans are unavailable. A SLOC is available through most financial institutions and typically carries higher interest rates than government loans, though it is lower than other lines of credit. With a SLOC, you only repay the amount you borrow, making small monthly payments while you’re studying, although interest accrues during this time.
