The MEL and MHLP degrees are for practicing professionals who have competed an undergraduate degree and who have a minimum of three years of full-time work experience in a related field.

## Professional experience



You must have a minimum of three years full-time work experience in a related field by the start date of the program. We only count professional experience gained after you completed your bachelor’s degree towards this requirement.

## Academic experience



You must have a bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to the program you wish to study. You must also meet UBC’s minimum [academic requirements](https://www.grad.ubc.ca/countries), which are based on the country where you completed your undergraduate degree.

## Program-specific requirements



Each MEL and MHLP program has specific academic and work experience requirements.

- Three or more years of relevant work experience as a clinician after completing your undergraduate degree
- Clinical education experience is an asset, but not required

[Clean Energy Engineering](/programs/mel/clean-energy-engineering "Clean Energy Engineering")- Undergraduate degree in engineering or a bachelor of science degree in environmental science
- Completion of a second-year undergraduate thermodynamics course with high academic achievement
- Three or more years of relevant work experience after completing your undergraduate degree

[High Performance Buildings](/programs/mel/high-performance-buildings "High Performance Buildings")- Undergraduate degree in engineering or architecture
- Three or more years of relevant work experience in the building sector after completing your undergraduate degree

[Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering](/programs/mel/naval-architecture-marine-engineering "Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering")- Undergraduate degree in engineering or naval architecture
- Three or more years of relevant work experience after completing your undergraduate degree

[Urban Systems](/programs/mel/urban-systems "Urban Systems ")- Undergraduate degree in a discipline related to urban systems (a degree in engineering is not required)
- Three or more years of relevant work experience after completing your undergraduate degree
