The MEL in Resource Engineering Management is a 12-month, full-time program at the UBC Okanagan campus in Kelowna.
Many of the courses you take will adopt a flipped classroom format. This means that you will be expected to review course content ahead of classroom time, through readings or watching lecture videos. During classroom time, you’ll be engaged in discussions and activities to apply what you’ve learned. This could include case studies, group project work, and experiments and demonstrations.

ENGR 549: Environmental Risk Analysis
Industries, hazardous waste sites, and various engineering projects pose significant risks to the public health and to the environment. Risk assessment is a tool to characterize and quantify risk, whereas risk management attempts to reduce and control risk factors. Environmental risk analysis finds cost-effective solutions for bringing risk to an “acceptable” level. This course will discuss various methodologies and tools used in environmental risk analysis.
APPP 501: Project Management & Leadership
Develop skills for leading complex multidisciplinary projects by using management processes that include: project management frameworks; standards; planning, scheduling and estimating; communication; and risk management. Case studies in industry-relevant project management will be incorporated into the course. This course is collaboratively delivered with the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration.
APPP 502: Sustainability & Leadership
This course helps students build skills to lead change that influences the triple bottom line and explores concepts related to sustainability, change agency systems thinking, awareness and perspective for engagement and communication, adaptive leadership, and change dynamics. It also incorporates case studies in organizational and social change. This course is collaboratively delivered with the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration.
APPP 515: Reliability Engineering & System Safety
This course aims to provide basic and advanced skills for reliability engineering and system safety. It covers the mathematics of probability, random variables and probability functions, commonly used probability distributions, statistical methods, fundamentals of reliability theory, reliability modeling, and uncertainty modeling in reliability assessment.

ENGR 570: Professional Resource Engineering Project
In this design project course, students will work on a technical or project management problem of interest to the resource engineering industry. They will use design thinking to solve a “real‐world” engineering problem, demonstrating their ability to frame a complex open‐ended problem in engineering/project management terms. Students will work independently, under the guidance of a faculty advisor, to solve a complex engineering problem in resource engineering by identifying and using appropriate tools and methods; defining a given engineering problem; developing, designing, and testing a solution; and collecting, analyzing and interpreting data relevant to the solution. In addition to submitting a comprehensive project report, students must deliver an oral presentation to students and faculty advisors.
APPP 503: Organizational Leadership
Understand the behaviour of people and groups and how this applies to management and leadership within professional organizations. This course explores motivation, group dynamics, organizational structure, leadership styles and tools for assessing organizational effectiveness. The course is collaboratively delivered with the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration.
APPP 504 Business Acumen for Technical Leaders – August Boot Camp
An asset to the aspiring technical leader, business acumen is knowing how business works and applying that knowledge with the goal of business improvement. This boot camp offers an elevated perspective of how technical skills contribute to building value in a business. The course immerses aspiring technical leaders in the practical application of core business skills and the development of six core business competencies, which are presented as modules: Managerial Accounting; Strategy and Performance; Market Evaluation; Operations Management; Negotiations and Contract Management; and Business-Case Building and Valuation. This course is collaboratively delivered with the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration.

ENGR 514: Regulatory & Societal Issues for Resource Engineers
The course explores issues pertaining to the legal and ethical aspects of federal, provincial and territorial regulations related to resource extraction, transport and processing. Topics include the effect of resource extraction on community engagement, and establishing relationships with indigenous peoples and external parties in the development of commercial operations.
ENGR 544: Life Cycle Assessment & Management
This course focuses on the theory and applications of life-cycle thinking in engineering products and processes. The purpose of this course is to introduce state-of-the-art methodologies and software to analyze the environmental and economic impacts of a product (or project) in its life-cycle. The course reviews the concept of sustainability from several points of view including economics, ecology, and business.
APPP 507: Professional Communication
This course will help early to mid-career engineers develop the communication skills (written, oral and graphic) that they need in order to contribute at a leadership level in their workplace. Topics to be covered include communication styles; gender and communication in the workplace; ethics in communication; communicating across cultures; the writing process; workplace document genres; preparation and delivery of oral presentations; use of social media in the workplace; and how to be an effective editor of one’s own written and oral communication. Students will study the principles that underlie effective workplace communication, then apply those principles in a variety of assignments related to case studies or on a technical topic of their choice related to their course of study. These documents will include a reflection, a résumé, a proposal, a formal technical report and presentations with slides.
